Ella Home Care’s Favorite Holiday Traditions

Traditions are among the most important part of any culture, and often they are tied to the holidays we celebrate. As we prepare to enter this holiday season, Ella Home Care wants to share the warmth of our own favorite holiday traditions with you! You may find that many of these are similar to your own. Or there may be something new you will learn! Keep reading to learn what Ella staff looks forward to most around the holidays.

Annual Holiday Open House

Every year Ella Home Care staff come together for a festive celebration during our annual holiday open house. We enjoy a wonderful spread of delicious treats and simply time spent together outside of work. This gives our whole team time to get to know one another on a more personal level and celebrate the holiday season.

Gingerbread House Kits

One of our favorite holiday traditions is putting together gingerbread house kits for our caregivers and clients.  We encourage them to make this an activity they do together during the holidays to create an extra special memory. Creating a gingerbread house takes patience, creativity, and a light heart. So, this is one more way that we take special care to create a fun and loving environment when our caregivers and clients are together.

Cookie Decorating with Clients

Another holiday tradition that is shared between caregivers and clients over the holidays is cookie decorating. Just like our gingerbread house making, this is an activity perfect for all ages and abilities. You can’t go wrong! Together, we decorate fresh baked cookies with festive colors and decorations to express our holiday cheer. And beyond cookies, many of our staff also enjoy helping our clients decorate their homes. For those who need an extra hand or a little extra height to reach an area with décor, we’re happy to help!

The Big “Sweets Exchange”

For the first time this year, Ella Home Care is introducing the new holiday tradition of a holiday cookie exchange! We can’t wait to share all of our homemade and signature recipes with one another by trading sweets and treats that we can enjoy all season long. Best of all, this tradition expands well beyond just our staff but to their families and friends who may enjoy the benefits of this cookie exchange as well!

Which one of our holiday traditions is your favorite? Is there a unique celebration in your family you want to share with us? Join in the conversation by leaving a comment below!

How COVID-19 Changed the Home Care Industry

Now nearly 18 months after the onset of COVID-19 in the United States, we can look back with the advantage of hindsight to see how the pandemic has impacted the many different industries – each receiving unique setbacks as well as advantages. It’s all a matter of perspective!

The home care industry was impacted greatly by the severe spread of COVID cases, especially among our elderly population. The clients we serve, day in and day out, tend to be among the most vulnerable. At Ella Home Care, we had to act quickly and comprehensively to solve the ever-changing puzzle before us. How could we safely provide care to those who need it the most? How can we protect our employees as well as our clients? These big questions needed answers, and even now our solutions are constantly evolving based upon the most current data and advice.

Take a look as Ella Homecare’s Kirk Brechbiel walks us through the COVID-19 pandemic and the impact it had on the home care industry within and beyond Pennsylvania.

What changes were most immediate and drastic for the industry?

“Foremost, our focus shifted to the race for information on COVID-19 and how it spreads. It was novel, so no one really knew. No one in the industry wanted clients or caregivers to get sick. Second, would anyone want us to continue coming into their homes? It was a legitimate concern. Finally, the attempt to acquire adequate personal protective equipment for our healthcare workers.”

How were we prepared…and how we were not?

“We were prepared in the aspect we had contingency plans worked out with the clients we serve. Clients are all given a priority tier upon assessment. The priority tier indicates the level of care they need. If someone was in a high tier, we knew we had to be there no matter what. Lower tiered clients typically had other support and could be flexible as to when we provided service. That was well planned.

What we weren’t prepared for was not having adequate personal protective equipment supplies, especially masks. As a non-medical home care provider, we typically did not have an abundant supply of masks. We scrambled and found some at the early stages of the pandemic. We now have a PPE plan in place where we track our supply levels and have a reliable supply chain so we know we will always have enough PPE for our staff.”

What COVID-19 changes have now returned to (almost) normal?

“Other than reinstating some in-person training, nothing has gone back to normal. Heightened precautions are still in place and likely won’t return to normal in the next couple of years. Hiring qualified individuals was difficult prior to the pandemic. It is ten times worse now. The hiring funnel has dried up due to a variety of reasons. However, we recognize that this is the new normal and we will adapt.”

Did any changes lead to a positive impact?

“I saw most of our caregiving staff do amazing things for our clients. The majority of our staff kept going to work despite all the distractions. The efforts from staff to continue to provide compassionate and reliable care to our aging neighbors truly were inspirational and kept me motivated. Because I’ll be honest, some days I questioned if all this effort was worth it. It is.”

Final Thoughts

“This pandemic is a 9-11 event. Like in the aftermath of 9-11, the world has changed forever. Healthcare, travel, how and where we work have all been affected. Not all in a bad way though. The mRNA technology that was used for the COVID-19 vaccines could change the world in regard to finding other vaccines or treatments for a variety of diseases. It truly is remarkable.  This event could also jolt the healthcare system, from learning how to limit the spread of infectious diseases to increase pay and respect for healthcare workers.”

Change is almost always an uncomfortable experience in our lives. Compound this further by change that is sudden and drastic, like a global pandemic, and you can have a recipe for frustration, exhaustion, and discouragement. Fortunately, now that we are mostly on the other side of the worst of the changes due to COVID-19, we feel fortunate to have survived the storm and to have gained some valuable insight along the way. Ella Home Care and its staff will continue to embrace the challenges that come our way, now with the confidence and wisdom, we can handle just about anything!

What change, as the result of COVID-19, do you find to be a valuable lesson learned? Let’s look on the bright side and share our thoughts on the positive things to come from this global pandemic. Comment below!

5 Things We’re Looking Forward to in 2021

With the New Year just a few weeks away, Ella Home Care looks toward this fresh start with high hopes that there will be many positive things ahead. 2020 was not the year we expected but we all learned some valuable lessons and managed to make some memories that will last a lifetime. In looking to the New Year, there are several things Ella Home Care foresees as positive changes and trends in the right direction. Let’s take a look at what those are.

  1. Better Adapting to Life with COVID-19

The number one thing most people are looking forward to in 2021, Ella Home Care staff included, is a world free of COVID-19, or at least a better-managed level of COVID-19. In 2021 we hope to see additional research that yields potential vaccinations, as well as a decrease in cases and death related to COVID-19. Once this begins to trend in the right direction, it’s possible we can slowly transition back to more normalcy in our everyday tasks.

Some guidelines may need to stay in place for a while, but even being able to gather together more frequently and in larger groups will be a most welcome change. And of course, we want to see safer work environments, friends and family reuniting, vacations being taken, sports returning and all the many things we have missed this year.

  1. Growing the Importance of Home Care

If there anything this past year has taught us, it’s that home care keeps our seniors safe at home while providing independence all humans crave. When it was discovered how COVID-19 was particularly dangerous to our aging population, how we cared for our seniors became a paramount concern. For those able to safely age in their home and maintain social distance from larger groups, this became a safe haven and in many instances the difference between staying healthy or risking exposure. We look forward to seeing professional home care more recognized as an invaluable service to our community.

  1. An Improving Job Market

We also look forward to job market improvements including people getting back into the workforce. So many people have lost their jobs or have been put out of business because of the COVID-19. And many still remain out of work. As we move forward – and hopefully out of a pandemic – the economy will heal and there will be plenty of new opportunities, particularly for those who have the heart for home care.

  1. Refining the Mission and Values of Ella Home Care

Looking forward, Ella Home Care plans to continue to improve upon making our business the “go-to” place to work in our senior care community by providing a supportive culture and safe environment for our employees. We have goals in place for 2021 to invest in our staff, grow our team, and to reinforce the core values upon which we are founded.

  1. Continuing to Help Others

And most importantly, we look forward to another year of making an impact in our community by helping others. This means both caring for our aging population and allowing them to age gracefully and comfortably in home, but it also means providing new jobs and opportunities within the Central Pennsylvania community.

What are you most looking forward to in 2021? Do you have a goal or resolution already in mind? We’d love to hear what that is! Leave a comment below.

How Ella Home Care is Caring for Our Clients During COVID-19

Every industry and individual has been impacted in some way by COVID-19. We have all had to learn to adjust to a new way of living, working, and connecting with one another. While some challenges are minor inconveniences, others are massive and life-changing. For the home care industry, we have had to make significant changes to how we care for our employees and clients at this time to ensure everyone is safe.

At Ella Home Care, we believe that health and well-being comes above anything else. We want to see our clients live the highest quality of life as long as possible. COVID-19 has made it difficult to navigate the balance between social distancing and also being able to help care for our clients. For the most part, this just can’t be done virtually. Here is an update on how Ella Home Care is caring for our clients and staying safe during the pandemic.

Consistent Communication

Clear and consistent communication is invaluable, always and especially as we navigate the changes and challenges of COVID-19. For Ella Home Care, this includes keeping our staff educated and updated on COVID-19 and CDC recommendations. As we implement new policies, we are sure that our caregivers are aware and adhering to them. Additionally, we frequently check in with our caregivers to ensure they and their families are well and taken care of.

Additional Training

Though Ella Home Care historically provided infection control training to our employees, additional training has been provided to combat COVID-19.  Frequent reminders are communicated to employees including the importance of hand washing and not working when sick.

Frequent Health Checks

Our employees are required to have their temperature checked prior to the start of each shift.  This also includes screening questions recommended by the CDC. If there are any concerns of their health or exposure to COVID-19, we adjust accordingly.

Protective Measures

We supply our caregivers with appropriate personal protective equipment like gloves, masks, hand sanitizer, and disinfectant wipes before they go into any client’s home. We also provide recommendations for their interactions with clients so they and the client are as protected as possible.

Reporting Issues or Concerns

Our caregivers know to report any changes in a client’s condition including if there is suspected exposure to COVID-19. We keep an open line of communication with our caregivers so that this information is documented and we can make adjustments to their care accordingly. Administration staff checks in with our clients as well.

Limiting Contact

Though we love visiting our clients, our administration staff has made the majority of our interactions with caregivers and clients contactless. Additionally, we reorganized schedules to limit the number of caregivers coming to one client without sacrificing care.

Ella Home Care knows the current circumstances is extremely challenging for our clients and caregivers, physically, mentally, and emotionally. We look forward to when we can be together again, face-to-face, and until then we will continue to take every precautionary measure to stay well.

5 Things Ella Home Care is Grateful for in 2019

As we approach Thanksgiving, many of us start to turn our minds toward the many things for which we can be grateful for in the current year. 2019 has brought change and growth for Ella Home Care, as well as one more year of doing what we love to do – help others! This alone makes us want to pause for a moment to reflect on the many reasons to smile and give thanks this year, and every year.

Join us as we offer five reasons we are feeling grateful heading into the holidays. We would love for you to join us in reflecting on some of your own feelings of gratitude this year, and helping to make this the season of grateful hearts!

  1. Grateful for new office space

Last year, Ella Home Care made the move to our new and expanded location at 839 Market Street in Lemoyne. As the business has continued to grow and evolve, it was the right decision to look for space that could grow with us. We are grateful to have found exactly that! From this new location, we are better able to serve our clients and caregivers with additional space and a dedicated area to provide ongoing training and education for our caregivers.

  1. Grateful for a great core of staff and caregivers

It so often goes without saying (but really it needs said!) how much we appreciate and rely on our caregivers to be the face and the heart of Ella Home Care. Without them we wouldn’t have a business, and we wouldn’t be able to serve as many aging adults as we do now. We are grateful for every hour, every task, and every sacrifice they make to serve others.

  1. Grateful for the wisdom we gain while serving our aging neighbors

If there is one thing you can never have too much of, it’s wisdom. We are grateful that this career allows us to gain wisdom and expand our perspectives each and every day. Our aging neighbors are a great source of wisdom. Though we are honored to be able to care for them, it’s really a mutually beneficial relationship. The love and wisdom shared is reciprocated 10-fold.

  1. Grateful for the connections we make and relationships we build with our clients and caregivers

Just about every aspect of what we do comes back to relationships. It takes a relationship built on trust, love, and understanding to care for another person especially in a time of need. Our caregivers exemplify this every day. Ella Home Care is grateful for the connections we make through our clients and caregivers, and to be witness to the ways in which new relationships bloom daily.

  1. Grateful for another fulfilling year of doing what we love

One more thing that has us feeling extremely grateful this season is for another year to do what we love – provide top quality care and comfort to our aging neighbors. We don’t take for granted that every year is a blessing. We intend to continue to grow and expand into 2020 and beyond, embracing every success along with every challenge and change that comes our way.

As we approach the end of 2019, what has you feeling grateful? Let’s keep the gratitude flowing by finding something to be thankful for each day!
